How to Get a New IP Address

Getting a new IP address, also known as "renewing," is quick and very easy in Windows. No matter your skill set, you can renew your IP address in a few steps.

Step 1

Navigate to the "Start" menu and select "Run." The Run dialog appears.

Step 2

Type "cmd" (without quotes) and press the "Enter" key.

Step 3

Type the following line exactly as it appears:ipconfig /releaseThen press "Enter." Note that this command may not be recognizable to some versions of Microsoft Windows. If this is the case, type: winipcfg /release

Step 4

Enter the following text exactly as it appears:ipconfig /renewThen press "Enter."

Step 5

Restart your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're a cable Internet user, you can often renew your IP address by disconnecting the power supply and cable feed to your modem and waiting three minutes.
