How to Get a URL for Pictures

By Jacqui Lane

If you want to display pictures from your computer on a blog, social networking profile or personal website, they must have a URL so that the website knows where the image is stored on the Internet. The URL is simply the address of a resource on the Web; everything that is available online has a unique address that allows it to be accessed from any Internet-connected computer. You can give your pictures a URL by uploading them to one of the many free image servers on the Internet.

Step 1

Go to the website that you want to use as an image host. Create an account, if you don't already have one.

Step 2

Select the option that allows you to upload, or add, new images.

Step 3

Browse to the image on your computer and select it. Click the "Upload" button to add it to the photo library.

Step 4

Click on the image after it has been uploaded to your photo library. Some image libraries place the image URL in a box beneath or beside the image. If the site you are using doesn't, right-click on the image and click "View Image." The URL for the image will be in your browser's address bar.

Tips & Warnings

  • To find the URL for an image located on a website using Firefox, right-click the picture and select "View Image." You can then copy the direct URL from your address bar. In Internet Explorer, right-click on the image and select "Properties." The picture's URL will be displayed on the "Properties" screen.
