How to Get Into Windows Vista If You Forgot Your Password
If you forget your Windows Vista password, you can reset it quickly and safely using a password reset disk or an administrator account. Windows Vista allows you to create several accounts for different users; however, the administrator account controls system settings and manages the entire computer. If you forget your password, resetting it allows you to create a new one to access system files. The reset procedure involves using simple password reset wizards.
Things You'll Need
- Password reset disk
Using a Password Reset Disk
Restart your computer and wait for the logon screen to appear.
Enter an incorrect password in the Password field and wait for the "User name or password is incorrect" message to appear. Click "OK."
Click the "Reset Password" button to start the Password Reset wizard. Insert your password reset disc in the optical drive, or if it is an external drive, connect it to an open USB port on your computer.
Click "Next" on the password reset wizard and select the password reset disk from the list of options. Type a new password and a hint for the password. Click "Next."
Click "Finish" to log in with the new password.
Using an Administrator Account
Log in to your administrator account if you are the computer's administrator.
Click the "Start" button, type "lusrmgr.msc" (without quotes) in the search field and press "Enter." If prompted, enter your administrator password.
Double-click "Local Users and Groups" and then click "Users."
Right-click the account belonging to the user who forgot his password and click "Set Password."
Enter a new password yourself or have the account owner enter a new password he wants to use. Re-enter the password for confirmation.
Tips & Warnings
- You can only use a password reset disk if you created one prior to forgetting your password.
- If you have to reinstall Windows Vista, create a password reset disk using the "User Accounts and Family Safety" tool in the Control Panel in case you forget your password again.
- An administrator can create several Windows Vista accounts for different users. Only the administrator can reset your Windows password if you forget it. If an administrator resets your password, you will permanently lose any saved email messages, encrypted files and stored passwords for your website accounts.
- If you don't have a password reset disk or another administrator account to reset Windows Vista passwords, you won't be able to log in to Windows. You will need to re-install Windows Vista.
