How to Get Money for Old Cell Phones & Accessories

By Susan Reynolds

If you have old cell phones and accessories laying around your house, you might be able to sell them for cash. There are many people out there that cannot afford a new phone, but would love to have a used cell phone at a discounted price. It would be a win-win situation. Whether you want to sell your personal cell phones or start a business selling old cell phones and accessories, these tips should help get you started.

Things You'll Need

  • Used cell phone or accessories

Step 1

List your used cell phone and accessories on free websites like Craigslist and Backpage. They will probably sell very quickly, so ask for a higher price and reduce it gradually until it sells. You can write a short description of the phone, the cell phone provider, and how much you are willing to take for it. You can even upload a picture of the phone.

Step 2

Use eBay to market your used cell phones and accessories. Auction sites are great for selling anything used and cell phones are very popular right now. Listing fees are only a few dollars and eBay will take a small percentage of your profit, usually 2 percent or less. When somebody orders your phone, you must ship it within a few days of receiving payment via PayPal or a credit card.

Step 3

Put an ad in the newspaper about selling your old cell phones. People without Internet connections still need to use cell phones and will look through the paper for ads.

Step 4

Buy cheaply priced used cell phones and accessories from auction sites or Craigslist. You can usually resell them on eBay or Craigslist for a profit, but make sure you know what the going price is for the phone before you buy it.

Step 5

Use a website service like to get money for your used cell phones. You can find out how much they will pay you for your brand of cell phone on their website. If the amount is satisfactory, ship your phone to the company and they will mail you a check.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add extras to your cell phone offer, like a free charger or cell phone case.
  • Beware of scam artists who want to pay by money order or have you deposit money for them. They prey on people selling items on eBay and Craigslist.
