How to Get Residual Output on Excel for Mac

By Emily Ediger

Generate a residuals output in your Microsoft Excel for Mac spreadsheet with the Data Analysis tool. Residuals reflect the variation in your statistical data. The Data Analysis tool provides several options for residual output including numerical or graphical formats. The Data Analysis tool is a component of the Analysis ToolPak that you can load from the Add-ins menu. Analyze the difference between your estimated and observed values with a residual output in Excel.

Step 1

Open the Microsoft Excel for Mac file with your statistical data. Click the "Tools" menu on the top of the page and click the "Data Analysis..." button. Select "Regression" in the "Data Analysis" window and click "OK."

Step 2

Select the y-values in the "Input Y Range" text box and select the x-values in the "Input X Range" text box. Click the "Labels" button if your data range contains labels in the first row. Click one or more residuals options in the "Residuals" group.

Step 3

Plot residual data by selecting "Residual Plots" or "Line Fit Plots" from the "Residuals" group. Complete your selections on the "Regression" window and click "OK." Save your Excel spreadsheet with your residual output.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your statistical data and residuals output separate by selecting a new sheet in the "Regression" window. Select "New Worksheet Ply" under "Output Options" to create a new sheet in your workbook and insert the regression data.
