Each website on the Internet is assigned to an IP address. This IP address is the physical Internet address of the web server that hosts the website and is a way to trace ownership of the website, server and hosting center. If you know the URL of a website you wish to look up, you can find the IP address that website points to by running a command in the Windows Command Prompt.
Click on the "Start" button, open "All Programs," click on "Accessories" and then click "Command Prompt."
Type "ping www.website.com" into the Command Prompt, substituting the name of the website you are looking up for "www.website.com."
View the returns that are generated in the command prompt window. The IP address for the URL is displayed as soon as the web server you pinged replies to the ping.
