How to Have Multiple Monitors With a iMac

Your iMac comes loaded with accessibility features and display options that allow you to customize your experience and ensure comfort and productivity. Multiple monitors enlarge your workspace. Program windows' sizes increase, icons expand, Web pages extend and multitasking becomes easier. With external displays you can organize your projects by limiting certain programs to a specific monitor, while arranging other applications on another monitor.

Things You'll Need

  • Mini DisplayPort cable or
  • Mini DisplayPort adapter (VGA, DVI or HDMI)

VGA Monitor to iMac

Step 1

Connect the VGA cable into the VGA slot of the external monitor. Tighten the knobs on the cable to secure the connector to the monitor.

Step 2

Attach the other end of the cable to the VGA slot of the mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. Tighten the knobs on the cable to secure it to the mini DisplayPort adapter.

Step 3

Plug the mini DisplayPort adapter into the mini DisplayPort of your iMac.

Step 4

Connect the external monitor to its power source.

DVI Monitor to iMac

Step 1

Connect the DVI cable into the DVI slot of the external monitor. Tighten the knobs on the cable to secure the connector to the monitor.

Step 2

Attach the other end of the cable to the DVI slot of the mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. Tighten the knobs on the cable to secure it to the mini DisplayPort adapter.

Step 3

Plug the mini DisplayPort adapter into the mini DisplayPort of your iMac.

Step 4

Connect the external monitor to a power source.

HDMI Monitor to iMac

Step 1

Connect the HDMI cable into the HDMI slot of the external monitor. Tighten the knobs on the cable to secure the connector to the monitor.

Step 2

Attach the other end of the cable to the HDMI slot of the mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.

Step 3

Plug the mini DisplayPort adapter into the mini DisplayPort of your iMac.

Step 4

Connect the external monitor to a power source.

Mini DisplayPort to iMac

Step 1

Insert one end of the mini DisplayPort cable into the mini DisplayPort of your external monitor.

Step 2

Plug the other end of the cable into your iMac's mini DisplayPort slot.

Step 3

Connect the external monitor to a power source.

Configure Displays

Step 1

Click the "Apple" menu icon on your iMac desktop. Select "System Preferences" from the drop-down menu.

Step 2

Select the "Displays" button.

Step 3

Click the "Detect Displays" button in the bottom-right of the dialogue window. This action will extend your iMac desktop to your external monitor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Configure both monitors to display the same screen by selecting the "Mirror Displays" check box at the bottom of the Displays window
