How to Hook Up an RCA Digital Converter Box

By James Clark

The RCA digital converter box processes over-the-air digital television signals into analog signals for viewing on older TV sets following the conversion to all-digital broadcasting. The box connects between the coaxial cable attached to the indoor or external antenna and the television. A coaxial cable can also be used to hook up with the TV, or newer sets can connect with a composite (RCA) audio-video cable. Once connected, the converter box should be used to change channels.

Things You'll Need

  • Antenna with RF OUT jack
  • Coaxial cable
  • Composite cable
  • TV

Connect with Coaxial Cable

Step 1

Attach the coaxial cable from the antenna to the RF "in" jack on the back of the RCA digital converter box by turning the coupler on the cable end clockwise to secure it to the jack. If the antenna cable is already attached to the TV, the cable must be unscrewed at the coupler and connected to the RCA box.

Step 2

Connect a second coaxial cable from the "out" to TV jack on the RCA digital converter to the RF "in" jack on the back of the TV.

Step 3

Plug the RCA box and the TV into a wall outlet and turn on both components.

Step 4

Press the "Scan" button on the front of the RCA digital converter box to program the available channels the box can capture from the antenna.

Connect with Composite AV Cable

Step 1

Attach the coaxial cable from the antenna to the RF "in" jack on the back of the RCA digital converter box by turning the coupler on the cable end clockwise to secure it to the jack.

Step 2

Plug the red, white and yellow connectors on one end of the composite cables into the three matching colored jacks on the back of the RCA digital converter.

Step 3

Insert the plugs on the other end of the cable into the three matching AV "in" jacks on the back of a TV equipped with composite jacks. Make a note of which set is used for the connection, as most TV sets have at least three sets of inputs.

Step 4

Plug the RCA box and the TV into a wall outlet and turn on both components, then press the 'Input" button on the TV remote control repeatedly until the RCA signal appears on the TV screen.

Step 5

Press the "Scan" button on the front of the RCA digital converter box to program the available channels the box can capture from the antenna.

Tips & Warnings

  • Change channels using the remote control that comes with the RCA digital converter box.
  • Connect all audio-video cables before plugging the power cords into the electricity.
