How to Hook Up My Laptop to My TV to Watch Movies
With the emergence of online movie services, such as iTunes, you may find yourself accumulating a rather large movie collection on your laptop computer. Unfortunately, you may not always want to watch these movies on your laptop's small screen. Luckily, with the use of a cable or two you can connect your laptop to your television and begin enjoying your favorite movies on your TV.
Things You'll Need
- Laptop with TV audio/video output jacks
- Television with audio/video input jacks
- Audio/Video cables (ie. Composite or HDMI cables)
- Computer media playing software (ie. Windows Media Player or Quicktime)
Determine which pair of cables you need to connect your computer to the television by referring to both of your device's manuals. Common cables used for standard definition televisions are composite cables, which are a trio of red, white and yellow cables. A common cable used for high-definition or HD is the HDMI cable, which is a small rectangular cable.
Plug one end of the appropriate connection cable(s) into the input jacks on your television. The location of these jacks vary based on the model of television, however they are usually located in the rear. On some models, there are jacks that are conveniently located on the front of the TV. Plug the other end of the cable(s) into the output jacks on your laptop.
Power on your TV and computer. Press the "TV/Video" button on your television remote repeatedly until the image on your computer's screen appears on your TV. Open the movie file that you wish to watch on your computer and begin playing it. Enjoy the movie and disconnect the computer from the TV when you are finished.
