How to Hook Up Surround Sound With HDMI

By Greyson Ferguson

An HD (high definition) television features multiple HDMI input connections, which enable you to hook up outside HD devices such as cable receivers, Blu-ray players and next-generation gaming systems. However, there is also at least one HDMI out port, in which you may send digital sound to a surround-sound receiver. Because only one cable is required for the hook-up, it does not take long to set up an HDTV to a surround-sound receiver.

Things You'll Need

  • HDMI cable
  • Surround sound receiver with HDMI port

Step 1

Insert the HDMI cable into the HDMI "Out" port on the rear of the high-definition television.

Step 2

Plug the opposite end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI "In" connection port on the back of your surround-sound receiver. Although the cable is capable of sending both audio and video signals only the audio is sent to the receiver.

Step 3

Power on the high-definition television and the surround-sound receiver. Set the audio playback to the HDMI connection and the audio from the television now plays over the connected receiver.
