How to Install a Wireless Repeater

By Tiffany Garden

A wireless repeater is a device used to increase the signal strength and range of a wireless router. Wireless repeaters are used in place of additional routers to avoid added expense. Many different companies manufacture wireless repeaters, so you'll be able to select the best choice for your budget and wireless networking needs.

Things You'll Need

  • Wireless router configured
  • Network name and password
  • Wireless router IP address
  • Wireless router MAC address

Step 1

Position your wireless repeater near an area that does not have good wireless connectivity or an area that you need to extend your wireless signal range to. Plug your wireless repeater into power. Wait for the wireless repeater to power up completely.

Step 2

Go to your computer and insert the installation disc provided with the wireless repeater. Some wireless repeaters use a Web-based configuration screen similar to your wireless routers, while others use one-touch configuration.

Step 3

Follow the on-screen instructions from the installation wizard. The wireless repeater may be able to retrieve all of the wireless network settings on its own. If it is unable to do so, it will ask you for your wireless network name, known as an SSID, as well as the type of wireless encryption you're using and the password. You may also need the IP and MAC address of your router to complete the installation.
