How to Install an Earlier Version of Internet Explorer

By Larry Simmons

Microsoft Internet Explorer is the popular browser shipped with Windows computers. Most computer users upgrade their version of the browser as new releases become available, but there may be times when you wish to use an earlier version. Microsoft makes several past releases available to download. Installation is quick and simple, and you can enjoy the earlier offerings in their most recently patched states.

Step 1

Launch your current Internet browser application and log onto the Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer download site (see References).

Step 2

Choose the earlier version of Internet Explorer that you wish to download from the listed applications. Make certain you choose to download a version that matches your operating system. Click on the download link for the version that you wish to install.

Step 3

Choose an Explorer language for your setup and click the "Download" button.

Step 4

Press the "Save File" button on the pop-up window and wait as the file downloads to your system.

Step 5

Locate the downloaded file in the "Downloads" directory of your "My Documents" folder. Double-click on the downloaded file to launch the installer and press the "Run" button. Follow the installation instructions presented by the program to install the earlier Internet Explorer program to your hard drive.

Step 6

Double-click the new Internet Explorer icon on your desktop to launch and use the earlier version now installed to your system.
