How to Install ATI Catalyst Graphics Drivers

AMD Catalyst, previously known as ATI Catalyst, is a package of graphic drivers for computers that have the Catalyst graphic cards installed. Your graphics card uses a graphics driver to communicate with the rest of your computer. Without the correct graphics driver installed, you would not be able to see anything from your computer monitor or you could but have slow performance and lock ups. Verify that you have the latest driver updates. Keeping your AMD Catalyst graphics drivers up-to-date could be the difference between a slow computer and a fast computer.

Things You'll Need

  • AMD graphics card

Step 1

Determine the exact model number of the graphics card that you're currently using by navigating to the "Start" menu. In the Search field, type "Device Manager" (without quotes). From the Results list, select "Device Manager." The Device Manager window displays all devices that are installed in your computer. Double-click on the "Display Adapter" entry to view the Catalyst graphic card information. Write the make and model of your graphics card that appears.

Step 2

Navigate to the AMD Graphics Drivers download page ( The page shows a searchable database of all AMD graphics drivers, including the Catalyst drivers.

Step 3

Select your operating system, the name of your graphics card and then the type of graphics card from the drop-down menus. Click the "Display Results" button. The Catalyst driver download page appears.

Step 4

Select the "Download" button next to the desired graphics driver suite.

Step 5

Right-click on the desktop and select "New" and then "Folder" from the pop-up menu. Name the folder "ATI Downloads."

Step 6

Click on the "Save" button. After the "Save as" button appears, browse to the ATI Downloads folder on your desktop and click "OK." The Catalyst graphics drivers are subsequently being downloaded. Wait for the download to complete.

Step 7

If you have previous Catalyst drivers installed on your computer, you must uninstall them before continuing. To do so, navigate to the "Start" menu and select the "Control Panel," "Programs and Features," "ATI Catalyst Install Manager" and "Change." The "Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for ATI Catalyst Install Manager" dialog appears. Click "Next." Select the "Express Uninstall All ATI Software" radio button. Then follow the onscreen directions and restart the system when finished. To verify that the legacy graphics driver has been uninstalled, return to the "Uninstall or Change a Program" list and ensure that no ATI software is listed. If ATI software still appears, remove any remaining ATI software components by repeating Step 7 and restart the system when complete.

Step 8

Close all open programs and temporarily disable anti-virus, firewall and webcam applications that may interfere with the installation process.

Step 9

Double-click the driver in the ATI Downloads folder to install. A prompt with a security warning will appear. Click "Run" to start the install process. If the Windows User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears, select “Yes” to continue with the install process. The Select Components to Install window appears.

Step 10

Click "Next" to proceed. Click on “Install.” The Welcome screen appears. Click "Next." The Select Installation Operation window appears. Select the radio button next to "Express" (recommended) or "Custom" installation and then click "Next." The End User License Agreement window appears. After reading the license, click on the "Accept" button. On the next window, a prompt will appear to specify the folder for installation.

Step 11

Click on “Yes” to the “Would you like to create this folder” prompt to continue. A window will appear with the “Select components to install.” Click "Next" to proceed. Your computer monitor will blink on and off during the installation. Click "Finish" after the installation process has completed. Restart the computer. Your new Catalyst graphics drivers have been installed.

  • Be sure you have an ATI graphics Driver
  • Don't install the driver if you are not 100% sure.
  • Check the site regularly for graphics driver updates!
  • Don't install the Catalyst graphics driver if you are not sure you need to update.
