How to Install Outlook Express for Free

Outlook Express is a free email client, provided by Microsoft and built into the Windows XP operating system. Microsoft has since released an updated client in the form of Windows Mail. If your copy of Outlook Express has become corrupt or gone missing, you can easily reinstall the application as part of the Internet Explorer 6 installer bundle, available for free from Microsoft's Download Center.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows XP

Step 1

Navigate to the Internet Explorer 6 download page, see Resources for direct link.

Step 2

Click Download and save the file to your desktop.

Step 3

Double-click the downloaded setup file. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step 4

Restart the computer. When the computer reboots, you will be able to access Outlook Express via the Programs menu within the Windows Start menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Microsoft released Windows Mail as an update to the free email client, bundled with Windows Vista-- unavailable to XP users. Microsoft then released an update to that email client called Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail is available for Windows XP and is considered an update to the aging Outlook Express.
