How to Jailbreak an iPhone With Redsnow
Apple's iPhone is a versatile device combining all the functions and features users expect of a smartphone -- it's a cellular phone, PDA and iPod in one sleek package. Even though it is rich in features, some users find the iPhone lacking or the limits imposed on it by Apple and the App Store too restrictive. Using redsn0w, a utility designed to "jailbreak" the iPhone, you can add the Cydia App Store and a great many third-party apps and functions previously unavailable.
Things You'll Need
- USB cable
- iTunes 10.2.1
- Redsn0w 0.9.6 RC9
- iOS 4.3.1 IPSW firmware file
Download the most recent version of redsn0w and iTunes as well as the iOS 4.3.1 IPSW firmware file.
Extract redsn0w onto your desktop and launch the app in Administrator mode by right-clicking on the "EXE" icon and selecting "Run as administrator."
Launch the "Task Manager" by right-clicking on the Windows taskbar or by pressing the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" keys simultaneously and selecting "Task Manager" from the menu that appears.
Click on the "Processes" tab and right-click on "redsn0w.exe." Click on "Set Affinity" and select "CPU 1" from the list.
Click the "Browse" button on redsn0w and navigate to the iOS 4.3.1 IPSW file downloaded in Step 1. Select it and click "Open," then "Next" when the browse window closes.
Click on the "Next" button at the bottom of the window after redsn0w verifies the IPSW file to install the Cydia App Store.
Turn off the iPhone and plug it into your computer with the USB cable. Put the device into Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) mode when prompted by redsn0w. For details on putting your iPhone in DFU mode, see Section 2 below. Click "Next" when the iPhone is in DFU mode.
Allow redsn0w to finish the jailbreaking process. Your iPhone will reboot. When it comes back online, it will be jailbroken.
iPhone DFU Mode
Run iTunes and connect the iPhone to your computer using the USB cable.
Hold down the "Home" key and "Sleep/Wake" button at the same time for exactly 10 seconds, then release the "Sleep/Wake" button.
Continue holding the "Home" key until a dialog box appears with the message, "iTunes has detected an iPhone in Recovery Mode."
Release the button before the iPhone enters recovery mode. Otherwise, you'll need to run TinyUmbrella and click on "Exit Recovery" to reset the device and try again.
Tips & Warnings
- If you are having difficulty running redsn0w in Administrator mode on Windows 7, try right-clicking on the "redsn0w.exe" file and select "Troubleshoot compatibility." You can then set Windows 7 to use Windows XP Compatibility mode and run redsn0w.
- While jailbreaking an iPhone is not illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Apple does not condone the practice. If you jailbreak your iPhone, you will void the phone's warranty. Do so at your own risk.
