How to locate your iPad if you lose it or it is stolen

By Steven S. Warren

Before the Apple IOS 4.2 update, it was necessary to become a subscriber of MobileMe to find your iPhone, iTouch or iPad. Unfortunately, you had to shell out $99 annually to benefit from this service. Once you update your devices to IOS 4.2 or higher, you can use the Find My iPhone app for free.

Step 1

Power on your iPad.

Step 2

Tap "Settings" and "Mail, Contacts, Calendars."

Step 3

Tap "Add Account."

Step 4

Select "MobileMe" and enter your iTunes Apple ID and password. Alternatively, if you have a MobileMe account, you can enter those specific credentials as well.

Step 5

Click "Next" and "Agree" to Apple's Terms of Service.

Step 6

Select "OK" to allow MobileMe to use the location of your iPad. This is necessary to allow MobileMe to find your iPad if it is lost or stolen.

Step 7

Tap "Save."

Step 8

Browse to Me.com and login with your Apple ID. You can now view the location of your iPad.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must be running iPad iOS 4.2 or later to activate this functionality. When you connect your iPad to your computer, iTunes automatically checks your current version and asks if you want to upgrade. Choose "Yes" if you are on any version before iOS 4.2.
  • You must have an iPhone, iPad or 4th generation iPod touch to use this offering.
