How to Lock Files in Windows

By Greyson Ferguson

Even with all the portable data devices, it is sometimes necessary to keep files on your computer's hard drive. If the files that need to remain on the computer are confidential, it is a good idea to lock the files down. This is especially true if the computer is shared among many users. The lock will make the file inaccessible to other users without the appropriate password, which is created by the user who locks the file.

Things You'll Need

  • Glary Utilities

Step 1

Download Glary Utilities (if not currently on your computer). This can be done by following the link in Resources and clicking the "Download Now" button located in the middle of the screen. Then when asked if you would like to save the file, click "Save File."

Step 2

Open the file once it has completed downloading. This will load the installation wizard. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Step 3

Launch "Glary Utilities." Click "Modules," "Privacy & Security" and "File Encrypted and Decrypter." This will bring up a new window.

Step 4

Enter the file you want to lock and choose a password for the file. You will have to verify the password by typing it again; then choose a hint, just in case you were to forget the password in the future. Click "Encrypt Now!" and the file will be locked.
