How to Lock the Screen Orientation on an Apple iPad

By Steven S. Warren

Prior to the release of IOS 4.2, a switch on the right-side of the Apple iPad allowed you to lock your Apple iPad's orientation. If you upgraded to IOS 4.2, a mute switch for your speakers is now in place of the old orientation-lock switch. For this version, the process for changing and locating the orientation changed.

Step 1

Press the power button on the top right-hand corner of your Apple iPad. Alternatively, press the "Home" button in the middle-bottom section of your Apple iPad.

Step 2

Slide your finger to the right to unlock the Apple iPad.

Step 3

Choose the desired orientation of the iPad. Examples include portrait mode and landscape mode.

Step 4

Double-click the "Home" button on your Apple iPad. A taskbar of apps appears.

Step 5

Slide your finger to the right until it slides no further.

Step 6

Tap the button on the far left. A lock symbol appears, meaning you have locked the Apple iPad orientation. Now, it won't change orientation if you turn the Apple iPad. Repeat this step to unlock the orientation.

Tips & Warnings

  • IOS 4.2 is required to use this feature. Tap "Settings," then tap "General," and look for the version number. If it is not on IOS 4.2, please connect your Apple iPad to your computer and choose "Yes" when Apple iTunes asks if you want to update to 4.2.
