How to Lock the Touchpad on a Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop
The Dell Inspiron 1545 includes the ability to lock or temporarily disable the touchpad so that you do not accidentally move the cursor when typing or when you connect an external mouse to the system. You can do this by altering the mouse settings in the Windows Control Panel. Locking the touchpad only takes a few moments and you can reverse the process and unlock the touchpad just as easily if you need to use it again.
Click on the Windows "Start" button and select "Control Panel." The Control Panel window will appear.
Click on "Hardware and Sound" then scroll down and click on "Mouse." The "Mouse Properties" window will appear.
Click on the "Dell Touchpad" tab then click on image of the touchpad in the window to access the Dell touchpad settings. A new window will appear.
Click the "Device Select" link in the top left of the window. Click the "Device Select" tab.
Click on "Disable" below "Touchpad" to the right of the touchpad image to completely disable the touchpad or place a check-mark next to "Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stick when external USB mouse is present" if you only want to disable the touchpad when the computer recognizes an external mouse.
Click "OK" to save your settings and close the window.
