How to Look Up a Postal Code in Canada

By Julianne Russ

An incorrect or missing postal code can delay the delivery of mail. The post office will return mail to the sender if the post office is unable to locate the recipient based on the incomplete address. The Canada Post website provides a convenient search engine where users can enter the address information and locate the corresponding postal code. Search by street address, rural route or P.O. box and even if very limited information, such as street or city and province, is available.

Searching By Street Address, City and Province

Step 1

Go to Canada Post's website. In the center of the page is a box with five tabs. Click on the first tab, "Find Postal Code."

Step 2

Enter street number (house number), street name, city and province in the appropriate boxes. The fields marked with red stars are mandatory.

Step 3

Press the green "Find" button. The website will display the postal code for the address.

Searching By Rural Route or P.O. Box Address

Step 1

Go to Canada Post's website. In the center of the page is a box with five tabs. Click on the first tab, "Find Postal Code."

Step 2

Click on the bar "By Rural Route or PO Box Address" located in the search box.

Step 3

Enter P.O. box or rural route number in the box and choose the province in the box below it. You may enter any additional information you have, such as street name, number or city.

Step 4

Click the green "Find" button. The website will display the list of postal codes. If you entered only a P.O. box number and a province, the list will show all postal boxes with this number in different cities of this province. To narrow the search, choose the city where the P.O. box is located.
