How to Make a Cartoon of Yourself in Photoshop

Reading cartoons and comic strips is a favorite pastime for many people. You can escape to exciting and different worlds in no time. With the photo-editing and manipulation program Adobe Photoshop, you can take a photograph of yourself, your friends and even your surroundings and make a cartoon that can be used to make your own comic strip. All the tools are right there in Photoshop. You will be making your own "funny pages" in time.

Scanning a Photo of Yourself

Step 1

Open Photoshop. Place the photo you would like to scan on to your scanner. Make sure the scanner is on and connected to your computer.

Step 2

Click "File," then "Import." Click "WIA Support." A box will appear, and you will see an icon representing your scanner or your scanner's scan box. Click "Scan" or "Preview" to scan the image into Photoshop.

Step 3

Click "File," then "Save As." Enter your desired file name, and then click "Save" to save the scanned image.

Step 4

Leave the scanned image on the screen. Click "Image," "Adjustments" and then "Auto Contrast" to correct the scanned image. Make any other desired adjustments at this point.

Converting the Photo to a Cartoon

Step 1

Click "Select," then "All."

Step 2

Click "Filter."

Step 3

Select "Artistic," then "Poster Edges." Your scanned image will change into a cartoon-like photograph.

Step 4

Click "File" and then "Save As."

Step 5

Enter a different name, and then "Save." Your image is now a cartoon and can be placed into another document or placed into a comic strip layout.

Creating a Blank Document to Be Used as a Comic Strip

Step 1

Open Photoshop. Click "File" and then "New." Enter a name in the "Name:" box. Click on the "Preset Sizes:" down arrow and select "8 x 10."

Step 2

Click the "Mode:" down arrow and select "RGB Color." If you will be sending this document out to a commercial printer, click on "CMYK Color." Click on the button by "White" under the Contents heading. Click "OK."

Step 3

Click to the open cartoon photo of yourself. Click "Select" and then "All." Click "Edit" and "Copy." Click back to the blank "8 x 10: document and then click "Edit," "Paste." Use the arrow tool to reposition the cartoon photo. Repeat the step for other cartoon photos until you have filled the page with your converted photos.

Step 4

Click the "T" on the main toolbar to add text. Place the text below or above the cartoon. Repeat the step for other cartoons.

Step 5

Click "File" and then "Save As" to save the comic strip. Click "File," "Print" to print the strip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Scan all photos to convert them first and then change them into cartoons.
  • Save your converted files under a new filename.
