How to Make a Shark on Facebook IM

By Jason Artman

The social networking website Facebook has a built-in instant messaging system that allows you to chat with your friends without waiting for them to receive and reply to messages. Although the Facebook instant messaging system appears to have no input other than text, it actually has several hidden symbols called emoticons that you can add by typing certain combinations of characters in messages. One of the symbols that you can use in the Facebook instant messaging system is a shark icon.

Step 1

Navigate to the Facebook website and log in. On the left side of the screen, under "Friends on Chat," are icons representing the Facebook friends who are currently signed in and available to chat.

Step 2

Click any of the icons on the left side of the screen to open a new instant message session with that person. The instant message interface appears on the bottom of the window.

Step 3

Click in the instant message interface to begin typing a message, and position the cursor where you would like the shark icon to appear.

Step 4

Type the keystroke combination "(^^^)" omitting the quotation marks. Press "Enter." A shark icon appears in the message.
