How to Make a YouTube Account

By Techwalla Internet Editor

YouTube is an online streaming video service that allows users to view and upload videos for free. Among many other features, users can rank videos, post comments, share videos with friends and post videos to their MySpace or Facebook pages. To join the millions who access and post to YouTube daily, follow the steps below to create an account.

Step 1

Choose a username and password. The username must be composed only of letters and numbers. Your password should include letters and numbers for optimal security.

Step 2

Visit the YouTube sign-up page (see Resources below) to fill out the form in the blue box under "Create Your YouTube Account." The information you need includes your email address, a username and password, your country of residence, postal code, gender and date of birth.

Step 3

Enter the text for the image provided in the "Verification" box. If you can't read the text, click on "Can't Read?" and a new image will appear. Check the box for the "Broadcast Yourself" email if you wish to receive the YouTube newsletter. You must check the box that confirms your acceptance of the terms of use. Click "Sign Up."

Step 4

Open the email you receive from YouTube and click on "Confirm Your Email Address" at the top of the message or paste the URL (provided in the email text) in your browser if the link won't work. Verifying your email address automatically signs in with your account and sends you back to the YouTube page.

Step 5

Click on "Account" at the top of the page and select "My Videos" to download your own videos to YouTube. Select "Favorites" to view your favorite YouTube videos (which you add to your favorites list by clicking "Favorites" under the video). Go to "Contacts" to add email addresses to contact friends and family about any new videos you post.
