How to Make an iPhone Work on Straight Talk With an E71 SIM Card

By Thomas McNish

While the iPhone itself is popular, the bill that comes along with it is less so. Verizon and AT&T iPhone plans are significantly more expensive than the Straight Talk plan -- sometimes as much as twice the price. It's easy to see why callers would like to have the benefits of the iPhone with the cost of Straight Talk. This is absolutely possible, as long as you use the Nokia E71 SIM card in your iPhone. While there's no need to unlock your iPhone to use Straight Talk's talk and text, you must jailbreak it in order to receive MMS, or multimedia messaging service.

Things You'll Need

  • AT&T iPhone (Verizon iPhones don't use SIM cards)
  • Nokia E71 phone
  • SIM card cutter
  • Paperclip
  • Jailbroken iPhone (optional)

Getting Talk and Text

Step 1

Follow the instructions on your Nokia E71 package to activate your phone. You can do this by calling a phone number, which will be on the E71 box.

Step 2

Turn the E71 off, and then remove its battery door, located on the back. Remove the battery, and then slide out the SIM card.

Step 3

Put your E71 SIM card into the SIM card cutter with the gold chip facing out -- you should be able to see the gold chip through the hole in the bottom of the SIM card cutter. Press down firmly on the SIM card cutter. This will remove excess plastic around the edge of the SIM card.

Step 4

Unbend a paperclip so that the end is sticking straight out and insert this end of the paperclip into the tiny hole located on the edge of the SIM card tray of the iPhone. On the iPhone 4, this can be found on the side of the iPhone. On earlier models, this hole is located at the top of the phone. Remove the SIM card tray after it pops out.

Step 5

Remove the iPhone micro SIM card from its tray.

Step 6

Insert your newly cut E71 SIM card into the iPhone's SIM tray, and then replace the SIM tray into the iPhone. Your iPhone can now send and receive calls and text messages, using the Straight Talk network.

Getting 3G Internet

Step 1

Connect your iPhone to a wireless Internet connection. Open your Safari browser, and then log onto "unlockit.co.nz."

Step 2

Press "continue" when you arrive at the website's home screen. You'll be directed to a new page. Press "Custom APN" on this page, which will direct you to yet another page, containing a list of configurable settings.

Step 3

Touch the "APN" bar near the top of the screen so that the cursor lands in it, and your text keyboard appears.

Step 4

Type "att.mvno" into the APN field, and then touch "Create Profile" at the bottom. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish installing the profile. Your iPhone now receives 3G Internet service.

Getting MMS Service

Step 1

Open the Cydia Installer on your jailbroken iPhone. Touch the "Search" icon at the bottom of the window. Type "TetherME" into the search bar, and then touch "Search."

Step 2

Purchase the "TetherME" application and touch the "Install" button in the upper right-hand corner of the window. Touch "Confirm" in the upper right-hand corner to begin downloading the app.

Step 3

Touch "Return to Cydia" when the TetherME app has finished installing. Press the "Home" button on your iPhone to return to your springboard.

Step 4

Return to Cydia, and then search for an app called "TetherME APN Editing." Install the free application the same way you installed the "TetherME" app. Return to your iPhone springboard when the app has finished installing. Your iPhone should now be able to send and receive MMS messages, phone calls and texts and surf the Internet using 3G.
