How to Make Changes to a Web Page

By Melanie L. Marten

Websites must be changed regularly to keep up with trends, new products or services, and to keep attracting traffic for the long term. These changes can be graphic or textual. Learn how to make changes to a web page easily and reap the benefits of updated content for search engines and website visitors alike.

Step 1

Open the control panel page of your website. This control panel should list the page files, include a folder with images in it, and also include folders for site add-ons such as blogs, forums, or ecommerce shops. Different website hosting packages come with different control panels. Specific information about where to find yours should be given by the hosting company. You will make all changes to a web page from this control panel.

Step 2

Select the specific page file you wish to change and click "Edit" next to its title. You should be directed to a page editor that includes either the HTML code for the website of a WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) representation of it. If you have a WYSIWIG editor, simply change the text that requires updating or modification. Add additional text by typing what you want to include and hitting "Enter" for line breaks.

Step 3

Add new text, or modifying existing text, on an HTML website editor by first locating it on the page. All basic text on a website should be between

tags. Headings should be enclosed intags, where the # is 1 for the largest heading, 2 for the next largest, and so on. Simply input the new text you want for each section of your website. Be sure to save your changes as you work.

Step 4

Change the graphics of a website by opening up their files in a software application dedicated to graphics such as PaintShop Pro or Photoshop. If you do not have the graphics saved on your hard drive, you can right-click on them on your website and select "Save As" to get them there. The easiest way to edit graphics within the existing website template is to save them, edit them by changing their color of style in a software program, and re-upload them to the hosting account file control panel.

Step 5

Make changes to a web page template only if you have some knowledge of HTML and CSS web design coding. CSS (cascading style sheet) files can be edited in any text program such as Notepad. You can easily change the color of backgrounds, text, headings, and borders by changing the six-digit codes for the colors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Back up and save all original files before you begin to change them.
