How to Make Desktop Icons Smaller On a Mac

Mac OS X has made many functions easy, including customizing a computer to just the right user specifications. With just a few clicks, you can change the size of your desktop icons to make them easier to read or increase the amount of space available on your monitor.

Things You'll Need

  • Mac OS X

Step 1

Click on a blank space in the desktop.

Step 2

Click on "View" and select "Show View Options." Alternatively, you can press Command + J to open "Show View Options."

Step 3

Use the slider to change the size of your icons.

Step 4

Click the red "X" in the upper left corner to close the "Show View Options" window.

Tips & Warnings

  • These same instructions can be used to change the size of icons in folders. Just go into the folder and select "Show View Options" from the "View" menu.You can also change the size of the text displayed under the icon.
