How to Make Great Catfish Bait With Bacon Grease

By Chelsea Hoffman

Making your own catfish bait is a cost-saving alternative to purchasing expensive commercial baits. Catfish are bottom feeders and are not picky eaters. This makes catfish bait a recipe that is easy to complete in your kitchen. Using bacon grease and other simple ingredients, you can make a great catfish bait. Homemade baits, flavored with meat drippings or bacon grease, attract catfish as well as other fish with its scent and appearance.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup bacon grease
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 qt. glass bowl
  • Small plastic storage container

Step 1

Add a cup of flour to the small glass bowl.

Step 2

Pour in the bacon grease. Include some small bacon trimmings as well. Make sure the bacon grease is warmed and in liquid form.

Step 3

Add the water and mix the mixture into a thick, gooey dough ball. Sprinkle a little flour over the surface of the dough ball to make it smooth to the touch; it should not be sticky.

Step 4

Stuff the dough ball into a plastic storage container. A standard food-storing package is adequate for this task. Put the dough in the freezer until needed. To use the dough bait, simply thaw it out and tear small pieces from the large ball of dough. Roll the pieces into smaller balls and slide them down the length of the hook securely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with your dough bait recipe, as there are many different variations of this classic bait. For example, some people add peanut butter and garlic to it to create a sort of stink bait.
