How to Make It So Only Your Friends Can See Your Facebook Profile

By Jason Spidle

The rapid growth of Facebook as a social network and information sharing platform has lead to numerous changes to the privacy of the website intended to expose content found on Facebook to a larger, public audience. Reverting Facebook to how it was originally designed, wherein only your friends are able to see your profile, can be done in a matter of moments by adjusting the privacy settings of your account. As many users intend for Facebook to be a strictly private network, resistance to changes in the openness of the website have caused Facebook to provide easy to use tools for controlling who can see your Facebook profile.

Step 1

Launch a Web browser and log in to your Facebook account.

Step 2

Click "Account," and then "Privacy Settings."

Step 3

Click "Friends Only," and then "Apply These Settings" to set your profile visibility to friends only.

Step 4

Click "View Settings" in the "Connecting on Facebook" section.

Step 5

Customize the display of Facebook information that is visible to the public by default including basic information, your friend list and the ability to send messages. Setting all these items to "Friends Only" will effectively hide your profile from public view or from being indexed by search engines.
