How to Make My PC Faster for Free

By Kefa Olang

As a computer is used, its speed and performance begins to diminish. This is mainly because the system becomes clogged with unnecessary files, programs and applications that consume system resources (RAM) with no added benefit to the computers functioning. As computer speed declines, it becomes prone to freeze problems, and errors during startups and shutdowns. With some basic troubleshooting steps, improve your PC's speed and performance without dishing a penny.

Disk Defragmentation

Step 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "All Programs." Scroll up and select "Accessories."

Step 2

Click "System Tools" and click "Disk Defragmenter" to open the Disk Defragmentation tool.

Step 3

Select your hard drive and click "Analyze." The Disk Defragmenter tool will analyze the hard drive and show you how badly scattered files are on the hard drive. The more files are scattered, the harder the hard drive has to work to locate them which as a result diminishes computer speed and performance.

Step 4

Click "Defragment." The Defragmentation time varies depending on how badly fragmented your hard drive is, but generally takes a couple of hours.

Disk Cleanup

Step 1

Run the Disk Cleanup Utility to remove unnecessary files that clog your computer, cause errors, consume system RAM and reduce computer speed. To do so, click the Windows "Start" button and select "All Programs."

Step 2

Select "Accessories" and click "System Tools." Click "Disk Cleanup" to run the Disk Cleanup tool. The tool will analyze the hard drive and open a new window with a list of files which are safe to remove without damaging system components. The files are placed in categories.

Step 3

Place a check on all of the following categories to remove files from them:Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Offline Web Pages, Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Compress Old Files.

Step 4

Click "OK." Disk Cleanup removes all the files and frees up system RAM which improves PC speed when opening and running programs, files and more.

Uninstalling Programs

Step 1

Uninstall programs you do not use which consume volumes of system RAM and decrease PC speed. To do so, click the Windows "Start" button and click the "Control Panel."

Step 2

Double-click "Add or Remove Programs" or "Uninstall a Program" (Windows Vista Users) to open the programs window.

Step 3

Scroll through and click the program you want to uninstall. Click "Remove/Uninstall" and follow the guided instructions to uninstall the program from your computer. Restart your computer if the program uninstalled requires it. Perform the same steps in future to uninstall unnecessary programs.
