How to Make PDF Files Smaller on the Mac

By K.C. Winslow

The Portable Document Format allows people to combine text and images in a file compatible with multiple computer platforms. However, PDFs are less portable when larger, image-heavy documents lead to a large file size. To eliminate problems with slow download times, bounce-backs from email accounts and sluggish computers, users should reduce the size of the PDF. The Mac OS X operating system includes Preview, a PDF and image viewing program. With Preview, users can reduce the size of a PDF file.

Step 1

Open the PDF in Preview by Control-clicking on the PDF file. Highlight "Open With" and select "Preview" in the menu that appears on the screen.

Step 2

Highlight "Save As" in the "File" menu. Enter a name for the reduced PDF and select a save location in the "Save As" window.

Step 3

Click on the pull-down menu next to "Quartz Filter." Select "Reduce File Size." Click "Save" to complete the process.
