How to Make Skype Not Launch at Startup

By Gabriele Sturmer

Skype is an audio, video and text chat application that allows you to communicate with other Skype members and call both landline and mobile phones using your laptop or desktop computer. When you install the program, Skype may configure itself to launch each time you start your computer. You can disable this feature if you want to launch the program manually or if other people use your computer and you do not want to grant them access to your Skype account.

Windows

Step 1

Open Skype, and then click "Tools" in the main program window. Select "Options" to view your Skype settings.

Step 2

Select the "General Settings" tab in the left pane, and then clear the "Start Skype when I start Windows" check box by clicking on it.

Step 3

Click the "Save" button to prevent Skype from loading at the next startup.

Mac

Step 1

Click the "Preferences" icon on the Mac Dock, and then click "Accounts" under the "System" heading. Select your user name from the left column of the window, and then select the "Login Items" tab on the right.

Step 2

Click "Skype" in the list of startup programs, and then click the "-" button below the list.

Step 3

Press the "Command" and "Q" keys simultaneously to close the window.
