How to Make Smiley Faces in Texts

By Stephen Lilley

Unless you own a smart phone, most cell phones do not support graphical smiley faces when sending text-based SMS messages. However, you can get around this by using a common technique for including smiley faces in text messages that dates all the way back to the nascent days of the Internet --- you can create your smiley using characters that your cell phone will support, namely the ":" and ")" characters.

Step 1

Insert a "colon" or " : " symbol into your text message if you want your smiley face to have both of its eyes open.

Step 2

Place a "semicolon" or " ; " symbol into your text message if you want your smiley face to appear to be winking.

Step 3

Use a right-parenthesis or " ) " symbol if you want your smiley face to be smiling.

Step 4

Use a lowercase "p" if you want your smiley face to appear to be sticking its tongue out. Your text message will now be complete with the smiley face of your choice.
