How To Make Your Own Free Website

By Carl Hose

Everybody wants a piece of the Internet these days. Making your own website gives you a way to express yourself to the world, or maybe an opportunity to start and promote a business. It used to be costly to find a host and register a domain name. Today, a number of free Web hosting services make the Internet accessible to everyone. You can design, build and publish your own website without spending a penny.

Things You'll Need

  • Free Web hosting

Step 1

Set up an account with the free Web hosting service of your choice (see Resources). Look for one that offers the best combination of space and built-in Web design tools. Stay away from free hosting sites that are heavy on advertisements. You can't get away from free ads, because these websites use them to pay for your free service. Even so, the fewer ads they display on your free Web page, the better your page will look.

Step 2

Log in to your account and start a new Web page. Free Web hosts let you choose a user name and password that allow you access to the built-in Web design tools.

Step 3

Begin building. Choose a template from the selection available, add your own text and upload graphics from your computer to your Web page. If your host offers logo design, use it to create a logo for your website. You can preview your Web page as you go.Upload graphics and other media from your computer to your free Web host by using a "Browse" feature and locating the files you want to upload. Once they're uploaded, add the files to your Web page.Save your progress every time you complete a design action on your website. Some free Web hosts have an automatic save feature, but you should save manually to ensure you don't lose any of your work.

Step 4

Upload your website when you're satisfied that it looks the way you want it to look. In most cases, this is as easy as pressing "Publish," which makes your free website immediately accessible to others on the Internet.
