How to Make Your Sony DVD Multi-regional

A DVD placed in a Sony DVD drive will not play if it has a different "region" code than the one set for your player. You can use hidden menu commands to make the Sony DVD player able to play DVDs from any region of the world. The Sony DVD player must first be put into a service mode. This can be done using its remote control. The procedure will not affect any of the other functions of the Sony.

Things You'll Need

  • Sony DVD remote
  • DVD movie disc

Step 1

Point the Sony DVD remote at the Sony DVD player. Press the power button to turn the player on. Press the "Eject" button. Wait for the disc tray to open. Place a DVD movie disc on the disc tray. Press "Eject" again to close the tray.

Step 2

Press and hold "Stop" and "Eject" together. Press up on the volume "arrow" until the the "Service menu" appears on the screen. Release the keys.

Step 3

Press and hold down the "Magic" key on the remote until the key flashes twice. Release the key. Press the "DVD" key. Press the following numeric keys in this precise order: 0, 5, 3, 3.

Step 4

Press and hold down the "Magic" key on the remote until the key flashes twice. Release the key. Press the following numeric keys in this precise order: 9, 9, 4.

Step 5

Press the "Magic" key once. Press the following numeric keys in this precise order: 0,0,1, 8, 9. Press the numeric "1" key.

Step 6

Press and hold down the "Magic" key on the remote until the key flashes twice. Release the key. Press the following numeric keys in this precise order: 9, 9, 4.

Step 7

Press the "Magic" key once. Press the following numeric keys in this precise order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Wait 10 seconds as the Sony DVD player goes into a standby mode. Press the following numeric keys in this precise order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 to start the Sony DVD player back up in multi-region mode so that it can play any commercial DVD. Press the "Eject" key and remove the DVD from the disc tray. Close the disc tray.
