How to Modify a PDF File

By Jamie Lisse

If you have a PDF on your computer that you want to make changes to or edit, you can actually modify the file. You will need the help of the VeryPDF PDF Editor software for Windows, which allows you to edit or change any PDF file, or PDFpen if you have a Mac. VeryPDF PDF Editor and PDFpen are ideal for modifying a PDF when you do not have access to the software program that the PDF was originally created in, or the original file, or a PDF creator such as Adobe Acrobat.

Things You'll Need

  • VeryPDF PDF Editor

Modify a PDF on a Windows-based computer

Step 1

Open up your preferred Internet browser. Go to the website for VeryPDF software (see Resources).

Step 2

Download and install VeryPDF PDF Editor. It is a free download but you do have to pay to keep the program. The trial period lasts for 30 days.

Step 3

Launch VeryPDF PDF Editor. Click the "Open" button on the toolbar to open the PDF file that you want to modify.

Step 4

Leave comments in the PDF with the comment tools if that is how you want to modify the PDF. Your comment tools are: stamp, textbox, note and draw. Click on the comment tools icon on the toolbar, which looks like two thought bubbles. Then click on the icon for stamp, textbox, note or draw to add your comments.

Step 5

Use the contents tools to modify the PDF. If you want to actually edit the content of the PDF, you need to use the contents tools. Do this by clicking the contents tools icon from the toolbar. It is the button with the black arrow that is directly by the textbox button. Click on the textbox button to actually add content to the PDF. Right click on any content that you want to change and select "Properties."

Modify a PDF on a Mac

Step 1

Open your web browser back up if you have closed it. Go to the PDFpen website.

Step 2

Download and install PDFpen to your Mac. It is a free download but you have to pay once the trial period ends. The trial period lasts until the full version is purchased and a watermark is placed on anything created on the trial version.

Step 3

Launch PDFpen on your Mac. When you start PDFpen you will be presented with an Open File dialog box. Select the PDF that you want to edit.

Step 4

Use the icons on the "Tools" part of the toolbar to modify the PDF. You can edit text, add new text, leave notes, draw a new object and move things around in the PDF.

Step 5

Click the "File" menu and "Save" if you want to save over the old file. Or select "Save As" to save as a new PDF file.
