How to Move Voice Memos to a Computer & Delete Them on an iPhone

By Diana V. Faustmann

Your iPhone's built-in "Voice Memos" app may as well be renamed the "Remembering" app. After all, you use it to capture fleeting thoughts and impressions before they flit too far away to be useful. Whether you've used the app to record inspirational "Aha" moments, important lectures or task lists ranging from routine to ambitious, you don't have to carry your voice memos around on your iPhone to revisit them later. With a sync, you can copy them over to your iTunes music library, where you can listen to them and keep them safe long after you've deleted them from your device.

Sync to ITunes Library

Step 1

Launch iTunes on your computer.

Step 2

Connect your iPhone to your computer.

Step 3

Click on your iPhone's name under "Devices" on the left sidebar.

Step 4

Click on the "Music" tab above the main pane on the right.

Step 5

Check the "Sync Music" checkbox. Whether you choose to sync your "Entire Music Library" or "Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres," check the "Include voice memos" check box also.

Step 6

Click "Apply" on the lower right to sync your iPhone. Your voice mails will copy over to your computer. In iTunes' left sidebar, you'll find them in two places: Within "Music" under "Library," and within "Voice Memos" under "Playlists."

Delete on iPhone

Step 1

Tap "Voice Memos" on your iPhone's home screen.

Step 2

Tap the three-bar "Index" icon on the lower right. You'll see a list of all the voice memos currently on your iPhone.

Step 3

Tap a particular voice memo that you would like to delete from your device.

Step 4

Tap the red "Delete" button below.

Step 5

Tap the "Delete Voice Memo" button that pops up to confirm your intent. Your voice memo will be erased from your device and no longer appear on your index.

Step 6

Repeat Steps 3 to 5 for every voice memo you would like to delete from your iPhone.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also email yourself a voice memo and save it to a folder on your computer before you delete it from your iPhone. Tap "Share" instead of "Delete" for the particular voice memo in your index.
  • If your voice memos don't appear in your iTunes library after a sync using iTunes 10, you will need to "fake-trim" them to overcome a software bug. You don't need to actually trim each voice memo. On your voice memo index, tap a voice memo's directional blue arrow on the right. Tap "Trim Memo" and then "Trim Voice Memo." Tap "Voice Memos" on the upper right to return your index. Sync your iPhone to iTunes when you have gone through your list.
