How to Navigate Facebook

By Kathryn Hatashita-Lee

Your Facebook homepage includes links on the left pane to help you navigate. Links such as Profile, Messages and Photos can send, receive and share your news with Facebook friends and other users. Before you start uploading your news, select the "Privacy Settings" from the "Accounts" menu. Customizing the settings will ensure that only people who you know will receive your personal news.

Step 1

Open your Facebook homepage. The News Feed in the center column displays news shared by your Facebook friends. As you "Like" groups or pages that interest you, more news will appear in the News Feed. Click the "Most Recent" button near the top of the screen to display news in chronological order.

Step 2

Click the "Account" button in the upper right corner of the screen. The Account Settings section and Privacy Settings include limits for who can see your personal information and what can be seen. Click the "Customize Settings" link to bring up a list of categories, such as photos, posts, family and relationships, and birthday. Select the range of potential viewers of your profile, such as "Friends Only" or "Friends of Friends."

Step 3

Click the links on the left pane, such as "Messages" or "Events." You can also access messages by clicking the second button beside the Facebook logo in the header. This button displays two dark blue callout symbols. When new messages arrive, a number appears to alert you.

Step 4

Click the "Profile" link on the header. Your personal profile appears with your name at the top. The wide center column is the Wall. The Wall is like an online bulletin board where Facebook users post comments to you. Type your news in the "What's on your mind?" text box in the Share area. To send private messages, use the "Messages" button instead. Click the "Edit Profile" button in the upper right corner to adjust what your viewers see on your profile.

Step 5

Click the "Photos" link to upload photos and videos for online sharing. The Upload buttons are located in the upper right corner of the screen.

Step 6

Invite only the people you know to be your Facebook friends. Click the first button next to the Facebook logo. This button displays two dark-blue heads. Type names or school networks that may include your friends.

Step 7

Type the name of a group or fan page in the "Search" text box, such as your city, favorite team or club. Click the "Like" button near the header to receive a news feed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select the Privacy Settings options carefully. Limit the range of people who can view photos and information about you and your family. If you have children, you may not want to reveal your city and their school.
