How to Obtain a URL

The first thing you need when starting a website is to obtain a URL. A URL (Universal Resource Locator) is your address on the Web. This is also referred to as a domain name. You will see buying an URL referred to as registering a domain name. It is all the same thing. To purchase or register a domain name, you go through a company called a domain registrar.

Getting Started

Step 1

Come up with ideas for your URL. Many names are already taken so have a list of ideas to work with.

Step 2

Go to one of the major domain registrars and set up an account. If you already have a hosting service, it might include the cost of registering a domain name in the hosting package. If this is the case, follow its instructions as to which registrar to use.

Step 3

Use the registrar's search function to check if the domain name you desire is available. Continue to do so until you find one you like.

Step 4

Consider how you want your name registered. It can be done as a .com, .net, .me or many other ways.

Sign into your account at your selected registrar.

Step 2

Enter the URL you have selected.

Step 3

Follow the website instructions for completing the domain name registration.
