How to Open 7z Files

7-Zip is a free file compression manager supporting a variety of compression formats. 7-Zip's native file compression format produces files with a 7z extension. It supports compression and decompression of the ZIP, GZIP, 7z, XZ, BZIP2, TAR and WIM formats. It supports decompression only for the RAR, CHM, CAB, DEB, ARG, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, RPM, UDF, VHD and Z formats. The program works in Windows 98 and later.

Step 1

Open your preferred Web browser and navigate to the 7-Zip website. Click the download link for your platform.

Step 2

Double-click the installation file to start the setup wizard. Select context menu option if prompted.

Step 3

Open "Computer" or "My Computer" from the Start menu and navigate to your file. Right-click the file and select the "Extract" option from the 7-Zip menu.
