How to Open a Email Account

By Leigh Egan

In today's interconnected world, having and using an email account is more of a necessity than a luxury. Employers, banks, schools and corporations almost always ask you to provide an email address. Setting up and opening an email account requires finding the right service for you, choosing specifics, such as a user name and password that you will not forget, and, finally, registration.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet access

Creating a New Email Account

Step 1

Go to any search engine on the Internet and search for sites that offer email services, such as Microsoft's Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, or Google's Gmail (see resources). When choosing which email account you would like to use, look for the options that will meet your specific needs, such as storage space, antivirus scans or spam protection.

Step 2

Read the fine print and details associated with a new email account. Acknowledge the terms and conditions, and if you agree, click the "Yes" or "I Agree" button provided at the end of the disclaimer.

Step 3

Fill out necessary details such as your contact information and date of birth. Choose a unique email user name and password. Use a variation of numbers and letters for a more secure password.

Step 4

Check to make sure your chosen user name is not already in use, then submit your information to set up your new email account. Write down your new email address, email website and password, and keep it in a secure place to which only you have access.

Step 5

Access your new email account by visiting the email website. Log in to your email account by typing in your user name and password in the provided areas. Make sure you have a secure Internet connection before logging in to your email account.
