How to Open a WPD File

By Katelyn Kelley

A WPD file is a file created with WordPerfect word processing software. Naturally, if you have WordPerfect on your computer, you should have no problem opening this file, provided your version of WordPerfect is an equal or later version than the software that created the file. If you don't have WordPerfect, however, other word processing programs have converters that allow them to open WPD files, or you can try a free online file conversion tool.

Use Microsoft Word

Step 1

Open Microsoft Word. For best results, use the most recent version of Microsoft Word.

Step 2

Select "Open" from the File menu.

Step 3

Select "All Files" or "All Readable Files" from the File Type drop-down menu and navigate to the location on your hard drive where the WPD file is stored. Its name should show up in the menu of available files that can be opened.

Step 4

Select the file name and then click "Open." Microsoft Word will open the WPD file on the screen.

Use Open Office

Step 1

Navigate to the Open Office website and download the free Open Office software to your computer.

Step 2

Install Open Office and open the application called Open Office Writer.

Step 3

Select "Open" from the File menu, locate your WordPerfect file and click "Open." It should open on the screen.

Use AbiWord

Step 1

Navigate to the AbiSource website and download AbiWord, an open-source word processing program that runs on Windows and Macintosh operating systems. The software is free.

Step 2

Install AbiWord, then open the application.

Step 3

Select "Open" from the File menu, locate your WordPerfect file and click "Open." It should open on the screen.

Online Conversion Tools

Step 1

Navigate web browser to a free online conversion tool website, such as Zamzar.

Step 2

Click the "Browse" button to upload your file, then choose the "File Format" for your desired conversion.

Step 3

Enter your email address and click the "Convert" button. Some companies email you the link to download the file when it's ready; others email you the file as an attachment.

Tips & Warnings

  • WordPerfect is able to save files in Microsoft Word format using the "File" and "Save As" command. Ask WordPerfect users you correspond with to do this before they send you the file so you don't have to convert it.
  • MacLinkPlus from DataViz can convert just about any Windows file to Macintosh format, including Word Perfect files.
  • When you open a file in a program that did not create it, some shift in formatting is to be expected, especially with complex documents that include tables and graphs. It's always better to open the file in its native application first and save it as a different file type from within that application if you need to move it to another piece of software and retain formatting.
  • With older versions of Microsoft Word, you may need to download and install the File Converter Pack from Microsoft before Word is able to interpret a WordPerfect file.
  • Do not expect a fast turnaround time with free online conversion tools.
