How to Open an SPX File

A file with the extension .spx is an audio file that has been compressed using the program SPEEX. SPEEX compresses voice recordings at 2 to 44 kbps. While many audio players are unable play .spx files, there are free programs that will be able to play them in both Windows and Mac OS. Two of these programs are VLC Media Player and Apple QuickTime Player. Both can handle .spx files in Windows and MAC OS and can be downloaded for free online.

Things You'll Need

  • VLC Media Player
  • Apple QuickTime Player

Opening with VLC

Step 1

Open your Internet browser and open the website http://download.CNET.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html.

Step 2

Double-click "Download Now" to begin downloading VLC Media Player.

Step 3

Click "Save." Open the file once the download is complete and run the installation program. Follow the on-screen instructions to install VLC Media Player.

Step 4

Once the program is installed, open VLC Media Player. Single-click "Media" and then single-click "Open File."

Step 5

Locate the .spx file you wish to open and then click "Play." VLC will now open and play the .spx file.

Opening with QuickTime

Step 1

Open your Internet browser and go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/.

Step 2

Select the version of the program you prefer and click "Download Now."

Step 3

Click "Save." Open the file once the download is complete and run the installation program. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Apple QuickTime Player.

Step 4

Once the program is installed, open Apple QuickTime Player. Single-click "File" and then single-click "Open File."

Step 5

Locate the .spx file you wish to open and then click "Open." Single-click the "Play" button to open the file.
