How To Open Ports on Linksys

By Sam N. Austin

Cisco provides routers for use in corporate and home environments. The Linksys line of Cisco routers are designed for home networks. Routers can be configured according to your preferences. For example, you may want to use a particular type of encryption to secure data sent through your router, or open a port in the router's firewall so that you can play an online game on your computer. Linksys provides a Web-based interface you can use to manage your router's configuration. You can use the interface to open ports on Linksys routers.

Step 1

Type the IP address for your Linksys router in your Web browser's address bar and then press the enter key. The default IP address for Linksys home routers is 192.168.1.1.

Step 2

Type the user name and password for your router when prompted, and then click the "Login" button to open the Setup page. The default password for Linksys routers is admin and, also by default, there is no user name. Leave the user name box blank and type admin in the password box.

Step 3

Click the "Applications & Gaming" tab in the main navigation menu on the Setup page. This will open the Applications & Gaming main page.

Step 4

Type a name for the application for which you want to open a port in the "Application" box in the Port Range table. The name is only for your reference and can be specific, such as "Warcraft," or general, such as "Video streaming."

Step 5

Type the number of the port you want to open in both the "Start" and "End" boxes in the Port Range table, and then type the IP address of the computer for which you are opening the port in the "IP address" box. Click to check the "Enable" box.

Step 6

Click the "Save Settings" button beneath the "Port Range" table to open the port and complete the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • For some versions of firmware, the user name may be set to "root" instead of being left blank.
