How to Play AVI Files in Windows Media Player

Windows 7 comes with Windows Media Player, a native application for playing music and video on your system. The list of file types supported by Windows Media Player is extensive, and it includes AVI files. You can configure Windows 7 to play an AVI file in Windows Media Player.

Step 1

Click "Start," then click "Default Programs."

Step 2

Click "Associate a File Type or Protocol With a Program."

Step 3

Scroll through the list of file types to locate the AVI file extension.

Step 4

Click the AVI listing once to highlight it, then click the "Change Program" button.

Step 5

Click "Windows Media Player," then click "OK."

Step 6

Go to an AVI file on your computer.

Step 7

Double-click the file to open it in Windows Media Player.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you install another media player on your computer, it may prompt you to set that player as your default player for media files, which will include AVI files. If you do not want to use another program to play AVI files, select the option that keeps Windows Media Player as your default player.
