How to Play iPod Movies on an XBox 360

By Stephen Lilley

Though it would be ideal, there is no way to simply plug an iPod into an Xbox 360 and play the movies found on the portable device. The Xbox 360 will only play movie files formatted in the WMV format (the format used by Windows Media Player), while movies on the iPod are formatted in the MP4 format. However, you can very simply use your iPod as an external USB hard drive and connect it to your Xbox 360 and play all the WMV movie files you want.

Things You'll Need

  • iPod
  • XBox 360
  • USB cables

Step 1

Connect your iPod to your computer via the USB link cable. It doesn't matter whether you have a PC running Windows or a Mac. Open Apple's iTunes program on your computer. Under the "Devices" menu on the left side of the screen, select the name of your iPod. Under the main screen in iTunes, make sure "Enable Disk Use" is checked.

Step 2

Click on the icon on your desktop that reads "My Computer" if you're running a PC. Next, double click on the icon that represents your iPod. On a Mac, simply click on your iPod's icon on the desktop. This will bring up a folder that will allow you to add contents to your iPod's hard drive. Now that you've enabled disk use in iTunes, you can drag all of the files you want to your iPod for storage. Drag the WMV-formatted movie files you want to play on your Xbox 360 into this folder.

Step 3

Disconnect your iPod from your computer.

Step 4

Connect your iPod to your Xbox 360 by plugging the USB link cable into a free USB port on your Xbox.

Step 5

Select the option that reads "Select Hard Drive" from your Xbox 360's main menu.

Step 6

Select your iPod from the list of available devices.

Step 7

Use the Xbox 360 controller to navigate through the contents of your iPod, which your Xbox 360 is recognizing as simply an external hard drive.
