How to Play MTS in Media Player Classic

The MTS file extension contains video data that was encoded using the Advanced Video Codec - High Definition (AVCHD) format. The MTS format was developed by Sony and Panasonic, and is used to encode video that is captured using Sony, Panasonic, and other high definition camcorders. Windows Media Player does not support viewing MTS files directly, so in order to view your video in Media Player you'll need to convert the MTS file to a different video format. You can do so using the software that came with the camcorder that created the MTS file or by downloading a shareware MTS conversion program.

Conversion with Camcorder Software

Step

Insert the software CD that came with your Sony or Panasonic camcorder into your computer's CD-ROM drive. Doing so should open a screen that gives you the option to install the software on the CD.

Step

Install your camcorder's video editing software onto your hard drive. If you're not sure which program to install, refer to your camcorder's owner's manual.

Step

Run the video editing program. Click "File > Open" and navigate to the directory that contains the MTS file that you would like to convert. Highlight the file and click "OK" or "Open" to continue.

Step

Click "File > Save as" and choose to save your MTS file to a different video format. Common video formats that are supported by Windows Media Player include AVI, MP4, and MPG. Once the file is saved in the new format you will be able to view it in Media Player.

Conversion with Downloaded Software

Step

Download a shareware program that is capable of converting your MTS file to a Media Player-compatible video format. There are several programs that are capable of performing this function. These programs usually have free trial periods, but you will need to pay a licensing fee if you want to continue using them.

Step

Run the download setup file to install the MTS conversion program to your computer's hard drive.

Step

Run the program. Click "File > Open" or "File > Add" and navigate to the folder that contains your MTS file. Select the file that you want to convert and click "OK."

Step

Specify the video format to which you want to convert your MTS file. Video formats supported by Media Player include MOV, AVI, and MP4.
