How to Print on a 4-by-6 Index Card
Some people, whether they have illegible handwriting or simply like for things to look as neat as possible, prefer to type information onto index cards. With typewriters, this was easy; with computers, it's a little more complicated but certainly not impossible. Although the default setting for most computer printers is to print on 8-1/2-inch by 11-inch sheets of paper, it is possible to print in different sizes, including 4-inch by 6-inch for index cards, by adjusting some of the printer settings.
Use a word processor like Microsoft Word to prepare your document. Under the "Page Layout" tab, select "Size" and then "More Paper Sizes." Set the page width to 6 inches and the height to 4 inches. Once this is done, type the text that you want to appear on your index card.
Click on "File" and then "Print," which will take you to the print menu. Choose the printer you'd like to use from the drop-down menu.
Set the paper size by clicking on "Properties," then the "Paper/Quality" tab. A drop-down menu will offer a variety of different paper sizes. Select the option that says "Index Card 4x6in." If you are using a Mac, click on the blue button immediately to the right of the name of the printer. This will expand the print menu and give you additional options, including paper size. Set the size to 4 inches by 6 inches.
Remove any paper that's in your printer and replace it with an index card. In the majority of modern printers, you will need to place your index card at the far right side of the paper tray.
Click "OK" or "Print" on the print menu and watch the printer do its job. You may want to print only one card to start so that you can make sure it's printing properly. When the first card appears the way you want it to, proceed to print as many additional cards as you need.
