How to Print Skype Messages

By Paul Higgins

Find out how to print conversations in Skype by using a native Windows tool, a standard text editor or a dedicated third-party application.

Print Skype conversations by taking a screenshot of your chats, transferring them to Notepad, or installing a program that opens Skype chat logs stored on your computer.

Tip

  • Consider asking for permission before printing conversations you had with one of your Skype contacts, especially if you plan on sharing those chat logs with a third party.
  • Print files someone sent you on Skype -- such as photos or documents -- by loading your conversation history with that user and double-clicking the file to open it in the default application associated with that file's type.

Take a Screenshot

Step 1

Launch Snipping Tool, a native Windows application you use to save screenshots.

Step 2

Select a contact.

Select a contact in Skype to load your conversation history with that user.

Step 3

Take the screenshot.

Take a screenshot of the conversation by clicking New in the Snipping Tool and dragging a rectangle around the conversation window.

Step 4

Click the Save button to save the screenshot on your hard drive.

Copy a Conversation to Notepad

Step 1

Load a conversation in Skype and select the messages you want to print by clicking and dragging your mouse cursor.

Tip

  • By default, Skype only displays messages you received or sent today. Load messages older than a day by opening the Conversation menu, hovering your cursor above View Old Messages and selecting Yesterday, 7 days or 30 days.
  • Search through your Skype conversations by pressing Ctrl-F and entering a keyword or phrase in the search box.

Step 2

Right-click and select Copy Selection.

Right-click the selected text and select Copy Selection from the contextual menu.

Step 3

Paste the conversation.

Launch Notepad, right-click inside the new document and select Paste.

Step 4

Press Ctrl-P to print the conversation. Optionally, press CTRL-S to save the conversation on your hard drive as a text file.

Install a Skype Log Viewer

Skype stores chat logs on your computer in a file named main.db, which standard text editors such as Notepad cannot open. However, free programs can let you view and print the contents of the main.db Skype database file.

Step 1

Download and install SkypeLogView, Skyperious or Skype Log Viewer.

Step 2

Launch the application you just installed and open the main.db file. By default, the main.db file is located in the following directory:

C:\Users\YourWindowsUsername\AppData\Roaming\Skype\YourSkypeUsername

Tip

If you use the Modern UI version of the Skype application under Windows 8 or 10, you can find the main.db file in the following directory: C:\Users\YourWindowsUsername\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.SkypeApp\Localstate\YourSkypeUsername

Step 3

Load the conversation you want to print and press Ctrl-P.
