How to Put DVD Movies on an SD Card

If you're on the go or traveling, you may want to have the ability to watch your DVD movies without lugging the actual discs with you. The high storage capacity of SD cards provides a convenient means to store this media in a small package. Conceivably, it's possible to store your entire DVD library in a fraction of the space. There are two methods you can use to transfer your movies to an SD card. Which one you use depends on the size of your card and if you want to use all of the features found on a DVD.

DVD Copy

Step

Insert the DVD movie into your computer's drive. If the movie automatically starts, stop playback and exit the movie player software.

Step

Insert the blank SD card into your computer's SD slot or an external card reader connected to your computer. It should show up as a lettered removable drive in Windows Explorer.

Step

Create a new folder on the removable drive and name it with the movie title.

Step

In Windows Explorer, copy the entire contents of the DVD drive over to the folder you created on the removable drive. This will typically be the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. In your movie player software, you can now point it to play from the folder on the removable drive and it will treat it just like a regular DVD, with all of the DVD features.

DVD Movie Conversion

Step

Insert the DVD movie into your computer's drive. If the movie automatically starts, stop playback and exit the movie player software.

Step

Launch your DVD video conversion software and direct it to find the DVD disc. Select your conversion options, including whether you want just the movie or the movie and any extra material converted. Once the options are set, start the conversion process.

Step

Insert the blank SD card into your computer's SD slot or an external card reader connected to your computer. It should show up as a lettered removable drive in Windows Explorer.

Step

In Windows Explorer, copy the converted movie files from the computer to the removable drive. Since converted movie files take up much less storage space, you can fit several movies on one SD card, depending on the card's capacity.
