How to Put Games on a First Generation iPod Touch

By Andrew Smith

Unlike updated versions, the first generation of the iPod Touch does not come with an "App Store" button. Also, it is not possible to transfer downloaded games (called "Apps") from your iTunes library to a first-generation iPod Touch until you have installed a necessary software update onto the player. This update is installed via iTunes.

Things You'll Need

  • iPod Touch cord
  • iTunes

Install iPod Touch update

Step 1

Plug the first-generation iPod Touch into the computer using the iPod Touch USB cord.

Step 2

Open iTunes.

Step 3

Click the iPod Touch name on the left side of iTunes. A variety of category tabs will open inside the center of the iTunes window.

Step 4

Click the "Summary" tab and "Check for Update." An alert window will appear.

Step 5

Log in to your iTunes account through the alert window and click "Update." The latest software update will be installed on the first generation iPod Touch. If you have never updated the device before, the card or Paypal account linked with your iTunes account will be charged $10. This update is necessary for putting any games on a first-generation iPod Touch. Keep the iPod Touch plugged in after the update has successfully been installed.

Download iPod Touch games

Step 1

Click the "iTunes Store" link on the left part of iTunes.

Step 2

Place your cursor over the "App Store" tab at the top of iTunes and an arrow will appear. Click the arrow and a drop menu will appear. Select "Games" in that menu and a variety of games and game categories will be listed.

Step 3

Browse through the categories and click one to view a list of different iPod Touch games.

Step 4

Click the game of your choice to open the main page for it.

Step 5

Click either "Buy App" or "Free App" on the main page for the game. An alert window will open if the game is not free. Click "Buy" in that alert window to download the App. A free game will automatically download to the iTunes library.
